Cladonia subcariosa Nyl.
     
  Flora 59: 560 (1876); Cladonia polycarpoides Nyl. in W.von Zwack-Holzhausen, Lich. Exsiccata 626, 626 bis (1892). T: Ober Riffersweil, Zurich, Switzerland, 1884, Hegetschweiler, Zwackh. Lich. Exsiccata 626 bis; lecto: H-NYL p.-m. 963, fide J.Suominen & T.Ahti, Ann. Bot. Fenn. 3: 422 (1966); isolecto: TUR-V17421.  
     
  Primary squamules persistent, 28 mm long, 12 mm diam., often imbricate, with sinuate or crenate margins, esorediate. Podetia growing from primary squamules, uncommon, 4–10 mm tall, 0.5–1 mm diam., simple or rarely branched, esorediate, esquamulose, escyphiferous; cortex continuous, smooth to subverrucose. Apothecia terminal, 0.5–1 mm diam., convex, simple, brown. CHEMISTRY: K+ red, KC-, P+ yellow. Norstictic (major) and connorstictic (trace) acids and homoheveadride (major) [A.Archer & W.Taylor, Phytochemistry 26: 2117 (1987)].
     
  Occurs in Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.; also in North America, Europe, Asia and the North Island of New Zealand.
